Green is very important to us. We are a very conscious company of people who care about the environment we live, work and play in. We encourage our employees to be green by providing them the opportunity to recycle. Many of our employees carpool to work.
We do have an extensive recycling program for paper, plastic, aluminum, and steel. We have active composting piles for leftover planting mediums as well as a composter for food waste.
Our most green contribution to the environment would be our wood boiler. We burn wood waste from a local sawmill to heat our shop, office, greenhouse and seed plant. Unlike systems that rely on fossil fuels, wood is a totally renewable resource, which, when burned, results in no net carbon dioxide increase and helps reduce our carbon footprint. Carbon dioxide is part of the natural plant-growth cycle and occurs naturally when trees are allowed to rot on the forest floor. By burning the wood waste we are not creating anymore carbon dioxide that would naturally occur as the tree was decomposing on the forest floor.
We are continuously trying to improve our green. 2010 marks the beginning of our employee green initiative. We are encouraging employees to take ownership of their green contribution in the workplace. A green award will be given to the employee that has the best green ideas of the year. This will be awarded at our annual health and safety dinner.
